Abarth Car History

Abarth is a famous automobile manufacturer known for its performance division which makes racing as well as road cars. Having its headquarters in Turin, Italy, this car maker had a well known association with Fiat and it was finally taken over by Fiat to be its in house performance car division. Founded in 1949 by Mr Carlo Abarth, the company adopted his astrological sun sign, a scorpion as the company logo. From that day this symbol began its journey from being a mere components manufacturer to being a world class performance car maker. Initially it started making high performance exhaust pipes for other cars and raced in Cisitalia cars. Shortly after that the company shifted its headquarters in Turin and began it famous association with Fiat in 1952. First model to be rolled out of the Abarth garage was the Abarth 1500 that was based upon Fiat mechanicals.

Over the next decade, Abarth became one of the most successful sports car racer beating companies like Porsche and Ferrari. It even won the famous Nurburgring race in 1963. After making a place for itself in the automobile market, the company began making tuning kits for road cars which would enhance their performance. It also helped Porsche and Simca design their sports cars. It also had a stint in the two wheeler segment and made custom exhaust system for Lambretta scooters that saw significant boost in their performance. Abarth was taken over by Fiat in 1971 and it served its in house performance car expert customising Fiat’s rally cars and developing certain carks like Lancia 037. Now Abarth is responsible for transforming Fiat’s road cars into powerful street racers. Over the period of time, Abarth has produced some of the finest cars, here are two cars that had made Abarth famous in the modern era..

The Abarth 500 is the performance version of the road going Fiat 500 car. Launched in 2008, this got huge response from automobile enthusiasts for providing a powerful performance car at a reasonable price tag. Owing to its small dimensions, the car offers perfect driving dynamics to the driver. The car is quick and handles very well around corners, its low ride height shows no sign of body roll around corners. powered by a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine, this car produces 133 horsepower and 180 Nm of torque. Its 5 speed transmission which is customised for providing quick shifts and is capable of hitting 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds and reaches it top speed of 205 kmph. The Abarth 500 looks very sharp and has a distinctive road presence, on the top of that its powerful and agile dynamics make it one of the most fun car to drive.

The second car in the Abarth line up in the Abarth Punto Evo. This car was aimed for people who found 500 too small for them and wanted more performance than the Fiat Punto. It looks similar to its Fiat’s counter part, but it has design cues which differentiate it from the normal version. Powered by a turbocharged 1.4 litre petrol engine, it produces 180 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. This makes Punto significantly powerful than the Abarth 500. This car can reach from 0-100 kmph in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 216 kmph.
Its ECU has been specially designed to provide adequate power to the driver at all times, and as a result there is zero turbo lag experienced by the driver. Having ferocious looks and a powerful engine makes this car a lot more appealing than the road going version.
